All shots need to impact the back berm.
You see this statement on the signs in the rifle and pistol bays and you hear us say it, but what does it mean?
When targets are placed partway down the bay instead of directly in front of the dirt berm, rounds can strike the ground and ricochet. This ricochet not only diverts the projectile from its intended path but also increases the risk of stray rounds leaving the bay. Such situations pose significant safety hazards to everyone at the range and surrounding areas.
No shooting at targets forward of the target stands.
The design of our shooting bays includes a dirt berm specifically intended to stop projectiles safely. When targets are placed mid-bay, the angle of fire often causes rounds to hit the ground before reaching the berm. Hard ground surfaces can cause rounds to skip or ricochet unpredictably, defeating the purpose of the safety berm.
Only you can Prevent Ricochets
To eliminate this risk, we’re asking all shooters to follow these best practices:
- Place Targets in Front of the Berm
Always position your targets directly in front of the berm. This ensures that rounds fired will travel straight into the berm, where they can be safely absorbed. - Check Target Height
Targets should be set at an appropriate height to ensure rounds travel in a direct line to the berm. Avoid placing targets too low or high, as this may lead to rounds hitting the ground or going over the berm. - Evaluate Your Shooting Position
Ensure your shooting stance, bench, or rest aligns with the target and berm. Adjust if needed to maintain a straight shooting path. - Use Proper Ammunition and Backing
Use suitable target backing materials that won’t degrade into debris, helping maintain a clear line of fire.
By following these simple guidelines, we can collectively maintain a safe shooting environment. The Redwood Falls Sportsmen’s Club is a place where firearm enthusiasts of all skill levels can practice and enjoy their sport responsibly. Let’s work together to uphold our safety standards and continue to enjoy our shared passion.
Stay safe and shoot straight!
