It’s a little too windy to go shooting. Given we had four foot drifts at the entrance to the range I can only imagine they will be a little higher after today. Instead, I offer up the Spring Newsletter. Hard copies with raffle tickets will be coming out next week.
Redwood Falls Sportsmen’s Club
Spring 2019
Warmer weather is on the way and soon we will be back on the firing line sighting in rifles, practicing and improving shooting skills, busting clays, and slinging arrows.
We cancelled the rescheduled Coyote Hunt warm up match in February due to snow on the range. There were lots of drifts. The match in January was cancelled due to extreme cold weather. We are going to try this two man team rifle match again June 8. The two man team shoots 10 shots each with any rifle, any sight, at each target at 200 and 300 yards.
The #3 Trap House should be completed in late spring. This will permit more High School trap shooting. We have been hosting between 70 to 80 HS athletes. Don’t forget we have trap shooting for everyone on Tuesday nights starting in May.
When weather permits we’ll get some more steel targets in place and more dirt work improvements. All the rain last year hampered some of the plans we had for improvements such as reshaping the 200/300 yard range so we get better drainage and less standing water.
The Sportsmen’s Club is again sponsoring the MN DNR Hunter Education Firearm Safety Course. If you are interested in participating as an instructor/volunteer let us know. We are always looking for volunteers to assist with Hunter Education. The dates for the class this year are Tuesdays and Thursdays in March 12, 14, 19, 21, 26 and 28 and a field day Saturday, 6 April 19. There is also a Field Day 4 Aug 19 held in conjunction with a DNR Instructor Training 3 Aug 19. If you are interested in becoming a Certified Instructor contact us.
We are always looking for volunteers to assist with other activities at the range. Items like running a match, setting up 3D archery targets, and range maintenance to name only a few.
The Archery Committee is developing plans to conduct 3D shooting events again this summer. When the dates are established we will publish them on our Facebook page and our website.
There can never be enough safety on the range. Shooting the pistol steel targets with a centerfire rifle cartridge in a pistol or rifle is NOT safe. It also damages the frame and that creates unsafe conditions for others. When shooting steel pistol targets it is a very good idea to wear safety glasses and don’t get closer than seven yards, 10 yards is better. Do not leave unattended firearms loaded. All shots should impact the berm, shooting at the ground causes ricochets. Please be responsible and ethical.
We are conducting a Military Issue Rifle day. The club is hosting the event 29 June. This event gives you a chance to bring out that old rifle that has stored way back in the closet and show it off and even shoot a few rounds. Let us know if you are interested and come out and join the fun.
A committee has been planning on some Defense Pistol Matches. An introduction match is schedule for 30 April 19. Come out and shoot it and find out what is planned for the rest of summer.
The banquet this year is 13 April, 6:30pm, at St Catherine’s Catholic Church. Pulled pork and pulled turkey is on the menu. The number of people attending has been increasing every year. We can use a couple of volunteers to assist in the kitchen. Please let us know on the renewal form how many are attending the banquet. Included on the renewal is a survey question about what range(s) you use to help us prioritize our resources.
Our main prizes this year are a Ruger 10-22 Gator, Ruger American .22 Compact, $100, $50 Cash, and a Wildlife Print. You do not need to be present to win. If you are the lucky winner of the rifles and not present you can pick up your prize at River Valley Arms and Ammo. Other prizes are drawn at the banquet. Tickets are $1 each. If you desire to purchase more you can include extra funds and return labels when you send in your membership renewal or buy them the night of the banquet. We are also planning on having other prizes and items available at a silent auction.
Several anti-gun bills have been introduced to the Minnesota Legislature and in the US Congress. Please stay informed and let your Senators and Congressman/Representative know your position. https://collinpeterson.house.gov https://www.smith.senate.gov https://www.klobuchar.senate.gov
