Redwood Falls Sportsmen’s Club
Spring 2018
Warmer weather is on the way and soon we will be back on the firing line sighting in rifles, practicing and improving shooting skills, busting clays, and slinging arrows. To make it even more fun we are adding more steel targets, putting trap house #3 into operation, and putting some 3D archery targets out, plus other events.
One event we conducted was the Coyote Hunt warm up match. Turnout was light but all of the participants had a great time. We are going to try this two man team rifle match again June 9. The two man team shoots 10 shots each with any rifle, any sight, at each target at 200 and 300 yards.
The club applied for a grant to complete the #3 Trap House. The grant has been approved and in the Spring we will begin the process to put it into operation.
Steel targets were donated by club member Kyle Smith. Additional targets are also in the works. When weather permits we’ll get the new targets in place.
The Sportsmen’s Club is again sponsoring the MN DNR Hunter Education Firearm Safety Course. If you are interested in participating as an instructor/volunteer let us know. The dates for the class is Tuesdays and Thursdays April 3, 5, 10, 12, 17, 19 and a field day Saturday, April 21.
The Club purchased fourteen 3D archery targets. The Archery Committee is developing plans to conduct shooting events throughout the summer.
There can never be enough safety on the range. Shooting the pistol steel targets with a centerfire rifle cartridge in a pistol or rifle is NOT safe. It also damages the frame that creates unsafe conditions for others. When shooting steel pistol targets it is a very good idea to wear safety glasses and don’t get closer than seven yards. This fall we had someone shoot at the trap house with 00 buck or a pistol and damaged range equipment. The end result is their moment of fun destroyed it for others. Please be responsible and ethical.
We are conducting a Military Rifle day. The club is hosting the event 2 June. This event gives you a chance to bring out that old rifle that has stored way back in the closet and show it off and even shoot a few rounds. Let us know if you are interested and come out and join the fun.
Some other guys have been planning on some Defense Pistol Matches. It is still in the planning stages.
The banquet this year is 21 April, 6:30pm, at St Catherine’s Catholic Church. Same menu as previous years. The number of people attending has been increasing every year. We can use a couple of volunteers to assist in the kitchen. Please let us know on the renewal form how many are attending the banquet.
Our main prizes this year are a DPMS Oracle, $100, Wildlife Print, and $50 Cash. You do not need to be present to win. If you are the lucky winner of the Oracle you will need a Permit to Purchase or a Permit to Carry. Other prizes are drawn at the banquet. Tickets are $1 each. If you desire to purchase more you can include some return labels when you send in your membership renewal or buy them the night of the banquet. We are also planning on having other prizes and items available at a silent auction.
If you haven’t registered to vote please do. There are those in Congress and the State legislature who would remove or restrict your right to own firearms. The only thing worse than not voting is an uniformed vote. Please stay informed and VOTE.
